Unlike other places, surfing did not arrive here as a tourist industry; it was a pioneering adventure, a spark of curiosity that ignited in the capital, Santander, and that would end up turning the region into the   <\/span><b>cradle of surfing in Spain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The history of modern European surfing started, as is well known, in <\/span><b>Biarritz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But that influence did not take long to cross the border, and Cantabria, along with Asturias and the Basque Country, was one of the first and most important nuclei where surfing germinated in our country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The first brave ones: The era of the &#8220;Plankins&#8221; in El Sardinero.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The epicenter of this story was not a wild beach, but the most elegant and urban of all: <\/span><b>El Sardinero<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Santander. The first chronicles date back to   <\/span><b>1961<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when <\/span><b>Antonio S\u00e1ez and &#8220;Lolis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  they glided over the waves with &#8220;plankins&#8221;. They were not surfboards as we know them; they were planks of wood that they modified themselves:   <\/span><b>They painted them, shortened the tails and even put something like a keel on the base.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real turning point came in <\/span><b>1964<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The young man from Santander  <\/span><b>Jesus Fiochi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brought from France the first fiber surfboard <\/span><b>the first fiber surfboard from France<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  to Cantabria. Fiochi was joined by a group of friends who would form the first generation of Cantabrian surfers:   <\/span><b>Jos\u00e9 Manuel Guti\u00e9rrez &#8220;Meco&#8221;, Maruri, Adolfo G\u00f3mez, Carlos Beraza, Manuel Merodio and Juan Giribet.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The photos of the time are pure European surfing history. The passion was such that   <\/span><b>Giribet created the first handmade board made in Cantabria.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the group went on to travel to the mythical <\/span><b>Waikiki club in Biarritz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  to get him a Barland board. These pioneers didn&#8217;t just surf; they competed. Jesus Fiochi became    <\/span><b>third at the European Championship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held in Jersey with one of these boards.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Consolidation: Competition and the creation of clubs<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What began as the hobby of a few friends grew rapidly. This group was joined by a new wave of young enthusiasts, including   <\/span><b>Gonzalo &#8220;Zalo&#8221; Campa Villegas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who started surfing in 1967 in Santander.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><b>1969<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zalo&#8221; Campa, together with other youngsters like Yoki Parets, Luis Moruza, Pope and Tote, founded the <\/span><b>Sardinero surf club<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This club became the most popular of the three that existed in the city at the time (along with Club Espa\u00f1a and CIS) and was a fundamental driving force for the organization and expansion of the sport. Local talent soon bore fruit:   <\/span><b>Zalo Campa was proclaimed Spanish Junior Champion in 1971.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cantabrian surfing was already a power.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Expansion along the coast: Somo, Berria and professionalization<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From El Sardinero, the fans spread like wildfire all along the coast. While the area of   <\/span><b>Ribamont\u00e1n al Mar (Somo and Loredo)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was already an epicenter of the surfing culture since the 60&#8217;s, other beaches such as <\/span><b>Berria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Santo\u00f1a, saw the first boards arrive in the 80s. <\/span><b>80&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the beginning, Berria was a lonely place;  <\/span><b>there were no surf schools or equipment rental<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only local surfers driven by the pure passion for surfing. Over time, word of mouth and the quality of its waves to learn consolidated it as a reference spot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the great modern revolution would come in the 90&#8217;s, from the hand of a young surfer and a beach: <\/span><b>David &#8220;Capi&#8221; Garcia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the beach of <\/span><b>Somo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><b>1991<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a very young &#8220;Capi&#8221; of only 16 years old <\/span><b>only 16 years old<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decided to turn his passion into his profession and <\/span><b>founded the Cantabrian School of Surfing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This was not just another school; it was the  <\/span><b>first official surf school in Spain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He began his career in a  <\/span><b>humble lifeguard hut<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  on the beach of Somo. Those were romantic years, mixing surf lessons with guitar nights and bonfires. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><b>1995<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new Coastal Law forced the demolition of the beloved hut. Far from being an end, it was a new beginning. With the support of his family, &#8220;Capi&#8221; acquired a    <\/span><b>new premises on the beachfront<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where the current school is located.
